Sun due north, a pale half-moon, still ice floating on the lakes, open landscapes and open sky.

Persfjord - Hamningberg - Mortensnes

From Persfjord

Drove from Vadso to Hamningberg. Hamningberg was too far away from everything to be burnt by the germans in 1944. The harbour was not sheltered enough for the bigger motorized fishing boats so the place did not prosper after WWII, so nothing new was built. The houses are used as cabins today. Thus Hamningberg became a time-capsule of a fishing village in the early 20th. century.
Persfjord lies halfway between Vadso and Hamningberg, never seen cliffs like that before.
Mortensnes is a locality where you can find marks of human activity from 10 000 years ago and almost into our time. Grakseteinen (fish-oil stone) was a sami holy site. In the background and a little to the left of the stone you can just make out another place of worship, the church at Nesseby. The dry-stone foundations is all that is left of an important 19th. century trading post - sic transit gloria mundi. Tillite is fossilized moraine, from an ice-age 600 mill. years ago.
Driving home I got this snapshot of a ptarmigan.

Ekkeroy - Vadso

A disagreement
Known profile ?
Whats going on down there?

Took a weekend trip to Varangerfjords northern shores. Friday evening I visited the bird-cliff at Ekkeroy. Drove to Vardo in the evening. Business as usual for the kittiwakes. Spotted a cliff-profile that gave me assosiations to a certain film-classic, recently remade. In less enlighened times it was a widespread theory that the entrance to Hell was situated at Domen, a mountain near the town of Vardo. One can only wonder what the witchsmeller pursuivants of those times would have thought of the installations of our time situated there. A few installations on the hills behind Vadso too, the highest ...whatever it is .... is without its usual dome. The dome went with the wind during a storm last winter.

Friday afternoon I walked from Ropelv to Skipshavn(appr. 9 km). Skipshavn (ships harbour) is a cove on the western side of Jarfjord. Nice place, but easier to reach by boat. Not wery difficult terrain, the mountains are not too high or steep, but some bogland caused slow progress.
