Fox Cubs and Otter

Not much of a summer. It`s snowing! Bright sunshine between blizzards, though.
Stumbled upon a fox´s burrow. The vixen seemed to be away hunting, the cubs were playing and enjoying the intervals between blizzards by basking in the sun.
They were aware of my presence, but did not seem to be particularly worried. After all, shold need be, they could reach the safety of the burrow in a second .

Took a walk along Ishavsveien in the afternoon. Saw an otter on its way up the stream between Rundvannet and Storvannet. There is a waterfall a little downstream of the broken dam. I guessed it would get ashore there rather than try to swim up the waterfall. I ran alongside the stream to try to get to the waterfall in time, I just made it and got a few photoes of the otter before it diappeared upstream behind the broken dam.

Macroes

Tried to take some macro photoes. A late spring, but the coltsfoot, at last, is in full bloom.

Midnight Sun

First day with a bright sky for some time. Bright, cold days and mirages go together.
Cold, but spring is coming. A hare, still almost entirely white tried to not look too conspicous.
The first visible midnight sun this year!

17th of May

The Norwegian Constitution's 194th anniversary.
Celebrated in cheerful mood in spite of the weather!

Kayaking

Brilliant weather, sun and temperature at several + deg. Snow melting, being wet and soft ("rotten" is the term skiers use). Decided to skip skiing and instead bring the kayak out of its winter hibernation this afternoon. Were to embark when a northerly wind started to bring in fog from the Varangerfjord. Rather slow going straight into the wind, so I made the trip a short one. My paddle tecnique probably a bit rusty too. Hardly touched the paddle on my way back, surfing is fun!

Tenting at Valvatnet

Brought my tent, sleeping bag etc. and camped at Valvatnet. Took some photos at sunset (appr 2200), the nights are reduced to a few hours of twilight now. Bright sunshine on sunday. For some obscure reason I had forgot to bring the sun-lotion. The forgetfullness earned me if not a bloodied nose, at least a red one, worthy a Falstaff or Sir Toby Belch. The view from Pettersengaisa (Pettersen´s Mountain) was magnificent, though. A raven flew by, its feathers glinting in the sun. Mountaintops are exposed to the wind, giving it ample opportunity to create strange forms and patterns in snow.

Oretoppen

Went skiing to *Oretoppen, the summit rises only 485 m above the sea, but it is one of the taller mountains in S*or-Varanger. Windy on the top.

*O is not O but a certain Nowegian vowel

Valvatnet

Went skiing in the afternoon to Valvatnet, a 6 km long lake. An area where lynx and wulverine roam. I didn´t see any, but I guess there are plenty of places for them to hide among the steep cliffs and boulder-strewn valleys.
